Dutch Crown Prince visits the flood protection facilities in Hitzacker

October 21, 2008

On 7 October 2008, the Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander of the House of Orange-Nassau visited the town of Hitzacker on the river Elbe in Lower Saxony, the town in which his father Claus von Amsberg was born.

The expert of the water-supply industry gave a speech during a trade seminar held before the start of the acqua alta trade fair in Hamburg and also paid a visit to the construction site of the flood protection facilities in Hitzacker where also VAG valves have been installed.

In the event of floods, the three pumps of the facility can convey a total of 60m³/s of the river Jeetzel’s own floods into the river Elbe. In case of a power failure, the three VAG EKN® Butterfly Valves with a nominal diameter of DN 2500 prevent the water from flowing back. To be able to ensure reliable shut-down even in an emergency, the valves were equipped with VAG brake and lift cylinders on both sides, the hydraulic drop weights made by VAG-Armaturen GmbH.
