Dubai, the thriving, dazzling metropolis on the Persian Gulf, is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates and is famous for its skyscrapers and high-rise buildings. Dubai is, of course, home to Burj Khalifa, the highest building in the world. Dubai, the thriving, dazzling metropolis on the Persian Gulf, is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates and is famous for its skyscrapers and high-rise buildings. Dubai is, of course, home to Burj Khalifa, the highest building in the world.

In July 2004, the municipality of Dubai announced to the city's more than two million inhabitants that it was going to invest several billion dollars in a major wastewater clean-up project. Until then, huge sewage trucks could be seen driving through the city streets every night, transporting sewage from the waste wells into the only 30-year old and fully overloaded sewage purification plant, which was located outside of the city.

Quick solution was needed -and deliverd by VAG

A solution to this problem was needed quickly because the amount of wastewater in Dubai rises every year by 25%. The planning phase started quickly, and ALAHMADIAH AKTOR entered into a joint venture with AKTOR SA of Greece. The Jebel Ali wastewater treatment plant was built on 675 hectares of desert to the southwest of Jebel Ali Free Zone.

Construction stage 1, which consisted of building a plant with a capacity of 150,000 m3/day, was completed in September 2009. Construction stage 2, which consisted of doubling the plant to a total capacity of 300,000 m3/day, was completed in April 2010.

VAG delivered some 1,500 different valves for the whole project

This included the water treatment facilities, tanks and pumping stations. There are several reasons why Montgomery Watson (MWH), the infrastructure engineering, construction and management company, chose VAG-Armaturen as its partner for this project: MWH appreciated the help they had received from VAG's experienced consultants selecting the valves for the different wastewater treatment processes. VAG's specialists also helped their peers at MWH explain the design and construction features of the selected valves.

MWH were also happy with the excellent price/performance ratio as well as the guaranteed on-time delivery of the 1,500 valves. Mr Ashraf Hussein, the client's Procurement & Contracts Manager, was also appreciative of VAG: 'VAG was one of the few suppliers that had valves for all of the applications that also met the requirements. VAG observed the strict terms of delivery and helped us ensure that the project was completed on schedule. We were impressed by the technical support we received from the VAG engineers during the different project phases. We can recommend VAG without batting an eye.'

All VAG valves installed and run dependably

Each of the Butterfly Valves, Swing Check Valves, Shut-off Gate Valves and Knife Gate Valves, in dimensions ranging from DN 40 to DN 2000, have been running for two years without interruption! And last but not least: Most of the city's parks are now watered with treated water from Jebel Ali.
